It has been a great privilege for the authors of this text to have had the opportunity to work in close quarters with Dr. In fact, the subtitle of this text was carefully crafted to underscore the importance of logistics as a key element of supply chain management. Looking back at the preface to that first edition, the first sentence reads: “Business logistics is a relatively new field of study in business administration.” While this discipline has grown in many ways over many years, we find that excellence today in areas such as supply chain and value chain are heavily dependent on sound planning and execution in the area of logistics. The first edition was published in 1976 by Dr. John Coyle, Professor Emeritus of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at The Pennsylvania State University.
